Packaging Size & Measurement Guide
Getting the dimensions right is the single most important step in custom manufacturing. Use this straightforward guide to measure your products accurately and avoid costly sizing errors.
The Golden Rule: Inside vs. Outside Dimensions
When ordering custom boxes from KCustomBoxes, always provide your Internal (Inside) Dimensions unless specified otherwise. Internal dimensions measure the usable space inside the box after it has been assembled, ensuring your product fits comfortably without bulging the walls.
Internal Dimensions (L × W × D)
Crucial for product fit. This is the exact cavity space available inside the box. Measure your product first, then add slight clearance if necessary.
External Dimensions (L × W × D)
Crucial for shipping logistics and outer master cartons. This accounts for the thickness of the paperboard or corrugated flute.
How to Measure Your Product Correctly
Length (L)
Measured from left to right along the longest opening side of the box rectangle. Ensure you lay your product flat and measure its widest horizontal span.
Width (W)
Measured from front to back across the opening side. Combined with length, this forms the base footprint of your custom packaging box.
Depth / Height (D)
Measured vertically from the bottom interior floor of the box straight up to the top opening edge or closure flap.
Common Sizing Pitfalls to Avoid
- ✕ Forgetting Material Thickness: If you measure your product tightly and order a box with those exact internal dimensions without clearance, rigid or corrugated materials may compress your item or fail to close. Always add 1/16 to 1/8 inch of clearance for snug items.
- ✕ Mixing Up Units: Double-check whether your quote form is set to Inches, Millimeters (MM), or Centimeters (CM) before submitting numbers.
- ✕ Overlooking Inserts: If you plan to use custom foam inserts, cardboard dividers, or molded pulp trays, measure the product plus the insert walls, not just the raw product dimensions.
